How Volkswagen keys work
The Volkswagen flip key has changed little in appearance over twenty years, but its electronics have evolved with each immobiliser generation. The blade springs out at the press of a button, and the transponder chip is read by the car every time it starts. Recent Golf, Tiguan, Touran, Passat and T-Roc models can have Keyless Access, with a key that stays in your pocket and a built-in emergency blade. The electric ID.3 uses a key with no visible blade: the car switches on as soon as the key is recognised inside the cabin. The Caddy and Transporter vans usually have a sturdy but heavily used flip key, often shared between several drivers. On some recent generations, adding a key is more demanding: feasibility is checked with the chassis number (VIN). A spare made in good time avoids an all-keys-lost situation, which always takes longer to resolve.

Your questions
Can a key be made for a Volkswagen ID.3?
The ID.3 key is programmed to the car with diagnostic equipment, like other recent Volkswagens, but the manufacturer’s requirements vary with the year and software version. Send us the chassis number and a photo of the key: we check feasibility and reply with a free quote.
Why doesn’t a key from another Golf work on mine?
Because each key is registered in the immobiliser of one specific car. Even if it looks identical, a key from another car is not recognised without programming, and its blade does not match your locks. A replacement key has to be cut and programmed for your Golf.
How much does a spare Volkswagen key cost?
