How DS keys work
On the first-generation DS 3, DS 4 and DS 5, the flip key houses the chip recognised by the body control unit and the three-button remote; its weak spots remain the hinge and the button that releases the blade. With the DS 3 Crossback, then the DS 7, second-generation DS 4 and DS 9, the key becomes hands-free: the car detects the key nearby, unlocks and starts at the push of a button. On the DS 3 Crossback, the flush door handles extend as the key approaches, so a weak battery soon shows. If the battery is flat, the emergency blade hidden in the key opens the door, and the key is placed in the backup position shown in the handbook to start the car. For these recent models, the feasibility of a new key is checked with the chassis number (VIN) before the free quote.

Your questions
The handles on my DS 3 Crossback no longer extend, is it the key?
It is often the first sign of a weak key battery: the car no longer detects the hands-free key properly. Replace the coin battery and try the second key. If both keys have the problem, the cause is more likely on the car’s side, and a diagnostic check can locate it.
Can a spare key be made for a DS 7 bought second-hand with one key?
It is strongly advisable to do it while one key still works. On a DS 7, the hands-free key is programmed via diagnostics and feasibility depends on the year: send us the chassis number (VIN) for a free quote. Meanwhile, keep your only key somewhere safe.
How much does a spare DS key cost?
