How Lexus keys work
The Lexus CT, IS, UX, NX and RX use an electronic hands-free key based on Toyota technology: you simply carry it to unlock the doors and press the start button. A small mechanical key is tucked inside the fob; it opens the driver’s door if the key battery or the car battery is flat. On hybrids, the “READY” light only comes on once the car has recognised the key. A weakening battery often shows up as a dashboard message and a shorter range. Depending on the year and generation, adding a key may require access reserved for the manufacturer, so feasibility is checked with the chassis number (VIN) before any work, with a free quote. Keep the key that still works: it often makes the job easier. Note the exact model year too, as Lexus key hardware changes between generations.

My Lexus no longer detects the key, how do I start it?
The Lexus manual describes a backup procedure: press the start button while touching it with the key, logo side. If the car starts this way, the key battery is probably weak. If nothing changes, even with the second key, the cause may lie elsewhere: contact us for a diagnosis.
Can a key be added to a Lexus without going to the dealer?
It depends on the model and year. On some recent generations, registering a key requires access reserved for the manufacturer. Send us the chassis number and a photo of your key: we check feasibility and reply with a free, no-obligation quote.
