How Seat keys work
Seats share Volkswagen Group electronics, with keys that change according to the model’s platform. Earlier-generation Ibiza and Leon models have a flip key whose blade springs out at the press of a button; the Arona, Ateca, Tarraco and newer Leon can have keyless entry and start depending on trim, with an emergency blade built into the fob. The second-generation Alhambra is built on the same base as the Volkswagen Sharan. In every case, the key contains a chip registered by the immobiliser system, which rejects any key that has not been paired. On some recent generations within the group, programming is more demanding: feasibility is checked with the chassis number (VIN). A worn shell can usually be replaced without changing the electronics, provided they still work properly.

Your questions
The key light flashes on my Leon and the engine cuts out, what should I do?
A flashing immobiliser light usually means the key is not being recognised properly; the engine may then stop just after starting. Try the second key: if it works normally, the first one needs checking or replacing. If not, the car needs a diagnosis.
My Seat starts but the remote no longer locks it, why?
The immobiliser chip and the remote are two separate functions of the same key. If the engine starts, the chip is recognised: the problem lies in the battery, the button contacts or the remote’s pairing. If a new battery changes nothing, checking the key lets us choose between a repair and a new key.
How much does a spare Seat key cost?
