How Toyota keys work
Toyota covers almost every key type. The first-generation Aygo, developed with the Peugeot 107 and Citroën C1, uses a bladed key with a built-in remote. The Yaris, Auris, Corolla, C-HR, RAV4 and Hilux come, depending on year and trim, with a bladed remote key or with the Smart Entry & Start system, where the key stays in your pocket. The second-generation Prius has an electronic key that slots into the dashboard. On hybrids, the car only switches to “READY” mode once the key is recognised. The Proace shares its base with the Peugeot Expert and Citroën Jumpy. On hands-free keys, if the battery is flat, the emergency blade opens the door and you can still start by touching the start button with the key, logo side. If all keys are lost, the chassis number (VIN) identifies the original key.

Your questions
Can a key be added to a Toyota hybrid without going to the dealer?
It depends on the model and year: some recent generations require access reserved for the manufacturer to register a key. With the chassis number and a photo of your key, we check feasibility before booking an appointment, and you receive a free quote.
My Aygo key is broken, do I need a new one?
On the first-generation Aygo, the key combines the blade, remote and chip in a single housing. If only the shell is broken and the electronics work, a repair may be enough. If the chip is lost or damaged, a new key has to be programmed to the car.
How much does a spare Toyota key cost?
