How Mitsubishi keys work
The Colt and Space Star use, depending on the year, a remote key or a flip key, with a transponder chip recognised by the immobiliser. On the ASX, Eclipse Cross and Outlander, many trim levels have a hands-free system: the key stays in your pocket, you unlock with a button on the door handle and start with a push button. A mechanical key is stored inside the fob to open the door if the battery is flat. On the Outlander plug-in hybrid, the key must also be recognised before the vehicle will switch on, exactly as on a petrol or diesel model. The L200 pick-up, often used on building sites, generally has a simpler key that is exposed to knocks, dust and moisture. Before ordering a spare, a photo of your key and the chassis number (VIN) quickly identify the right key model and programming method.

Your questions
My L200 only has one key, is that risky?
Yes, especially for a work vehicle that has to be on the road every day. If that key is lost, the vehicle has to be opened and a new key programmed without an original to copy, which takes longer than a simple spare. Making a spare from the existing key remains the simplest option.
My Outlander has a hands-free key: can I open it if the battery is flat?
Yes: a mechanical key is stored inside the hands-free fob and opens the driver’s door. To start the car, the owner’s manual describes a backup procedure for a key with a weak battery. If the key is still not recognised with a new battery, contact us for a check.
How much does a spare Mitsubishi key cost?
