How Audi keys work
At Audi, the shape of the key mainly depends on the generation. The A1, A3, Q3 and TT, like the older A4 and A6, use a flip remote key. Several A4, A5, A6 and Q5 models of the following generation have a rectangular key with no visible blade, which you push into a slot in the dashboard before pressing the start button. Recent models, including the Q2, Q7 and latest A3, use a comfort key that stays in your pocket when the hands-free option is fitted. All these keys contain an emergency blade to open the door if the battery is flat. On the most recent Volkswagen Group generations, some programming relies on protected data: feasibility is checked with the chassis number (VIN) and a free quote. Keep your existing key: it makes the job much simpler than a situation where all keys are lost.

My Audi A4 key won’t start the car when I push it into the slot, why?
On the A4, A5 and Q5 with a rectangular key, the key is read by the electronic ignition unit behind the slot. A weak battery, a circuit damaged by a fall or a tired ignition unit all give the same symptom. Try the second key first: if it starts the car, the first key is at fault and can be replaced.
Can a hands-free key be added to an Audi that didn’t have one?
Generally not. The hands-free function relies on aerials and a control unit fitted at the factory. A comfort key only works hands-free if the car already has that equipment. The chassis number (VIN) tells us exactly which key your Audi accepts before anything is ordered.
