How Porsche keys work
Since the mid-2000s, the Porsche key on most models has been shaped like a car. On many 911, Boxster, Cayman and Cayenne models, it turns in an ignition switch to the left of the steering wheel, in keeping with the brand’s tradition; a mechanical blade opens a door if the battery is flat. With the Porsche Entry & Drive option, the key stays in your pocket: you turn a fixed control in the ignition switch instead, or press a button depending on the model. More recent Macan, Panamera and Cayenne models use more advanced electronics, where the key is recognised by several control units before starting. On a Porsche, the feasibility of a spare or replacement key varies greatly with the model and year: it is checked with the chassis number (VIN), before any appointment and with a free quote. Keep every working key safe.

Your questions
My Porsche key shell is damaged, does it need reprogramming?
Not necessarily. If the internal electronics still work, it is sometimes possible to fit them into a new shell without touching the programming. It all depends on the model and the condition of the circuit board: show us the key for a check before deciding, to avoid unnecessary spending.
How do I know if my Porsche has Entry & Drive?
Generally, an equipped car unlocks when you touch the door handle with the key in your pocket, and the ignition has a control you turn instead of a key, or a button depending on the model. If in doubt, the chassis number shows the car’s original equipment.
