How Smart keys work
Smart keys have varied a great deal from one generation to the next. First-generation Fortwo and Roadster models use the brand’s own electronics, with a remote key and a chip recognised by the immobiliser. The second-generation Fortwo keeps a Smart key, with a few changes. The first-generation Forfour shares its base with the Mitsubishi Colt, while the Fortwo and Forfour launched in 2014 share theirs with the Renault Twingo, and their key is close to the Twingo’s. The first step is therefore to identify the exact generation: the year of first registration and the chassis number (VIN) are usually enough. A photo of the key also helps, as the shape of the fob differs clearly between versions. On these small keys, handled constantly in city driving, wear to the shell and buttons and a weakening battery are common.

Your questions
Does my Smart Forfour have a Smart, Mitsubishi or Renault key?
It depends on the generation. The Forfour sold from 2004 to 2006 shares its base with the Mitsubishi Colt; the one launched in 2014 shares its base with the Renault Twingo. The key and programming method follow that base. The year on the registration certificate settles the question.
My Smart Roadster only has one key left, what should I do?
Make a spare while that key still works. The Roadster was only built for a short time and its key is specific to the brand; if all keys were lost, the job would take longer. Send us a photo of the key and the chassis number: we check feasibility and give you a free quote.
How much does a spare Smart key cost?
