How Hyundai keys work
The flip key on the i10, i20, i30 and ix35 combines a retractable blade, a two- or three-button remote and a chip read by the aerial around the ignition barrel. With use, the blade release button sticks and the shell splits in two at the clip; when the electronics are intact, a new casing is enough. Tucson, Kona and Santa Fe models with a Start button use a smart key: the car recognises the key nearby, and a mechanical blade slides out of the casing to open the door if the battery is flat. A weakening battery first shows as reduced range, then as a dashboard message. Before ordering a key, the chassis number (VIN) tells a flip key from a smart key, because the same model can take either one depending on the trim.

Your questions
The shell of my Hyundai i20 key has come apart, does a key need reprogramming?
Not always. If the chip and the remote circuit are intact, they can be moved into a new shell with a blade cut to match. The chip is sometimes housed separately in the shell, so it must be recovered carefully. If one of these parts is lost or broken, a new key is programmed to the car.
My Hyundai Tucson came with only one smart key, is that risky?
Yes: if it were lost, the car would have to be opened and a key programmed with no reference at all, which takes longer. Making a spare while the key still works is simpler. Send us the chassis number (VIN) and year to check the key type and get a free quote.
