How Kia keys work
On the Picanto, Rio, Ceed and some Stonic models, the flip key contains the immobiliser chip and a three-button remote, one of which opens the tailgate on many versions. Better-equipped Sportage, Niro, Sorento and Stonic models get a smart key: keyless entry via the door handle buttons and push-button start. When the smart key battery weakens, the handbook says to press the start button with the key itself, so its aerial is read at very close range; the emergency blade opens the door. This workaround does not replace a battery change or, if the fault persists, a check of the key. On recent hybrid or electric Niro and Sportage models, feasibility is checked with the chassis number (VIN). For a spare, bring the working key: its blade profile and buttons will serve as the reference.

Your questions
My Kia Sportage only starts when I press the button with the key, is that normal?
That is the backup procedure for when the smart key is no longer properly detected, usually because of a weak battery. Replace the coin battery: if normal starting returns, the problem is solved. If not, try the second key; if it works normally, the first key is faulty and can be replaced.
Can a spare flip key be made for a Kia Picanto?
Yes. The blade is cut from the existing key or the key code, then the chip and remote are programmed to the car via diagnostics. Just check how many buttons your current key has, as some trims have an extra button that needs to be on the spare as well.
How much does a spare Kia key cost?
