How Nissan keys work
Older Micra and Note models have a bladed key with a remote, whose chip is recognised by the immobiliser every time the ignition is switched on. Nissan then rolled out its “Intelligent Key”: on the Qashqai, Juke, X-Trail and Leaf, it unlocks with the button on the door handle and starts with a push button; a mechanical key slides into the fob to open the door if the battery is flat. On the electric Leaf, the key must be recognised before the car switches to ready-to-drive mode. The Navara work pick-up uses, depending on generation and trim, a bladed key or a hands-free system. A weakening battery often shows up as a dashboard message or a shorter range. Before considering a new key, check whether the second one works. If all keys are lost, the chassis number (VIN) identifies the original key.

Your questions
My Qashqai shows “key not detected”, what should I do?
First replace the Intelligent Key battery, the most common cause. Depending on the model, the manual also explains how to start with a weak battery by holding the key close to the start button. If the message persists with a new battery and with the second key, the car needs a diagnosis.
Can a new key be made for a Nissan Leaf?
The Leaf uses an Intelligent Key like the petrol and diesel models, programmed to the car with diagnostic equipment. Feasibility depends on the year: send us the chassis number and a photo of your key for a free quote. Keep the key that still works, it makes programming easier.
How much does a spare Nissan key cost?
