How Mini keys work
The Mini has gone through several key systems. The first BMW-era One and Cooper models use a conventional bladed key with a remote. From the next generation on, the distinctive round key is inserted into a slot in the dashboard before pressing the start button; it hides a small emergency blade for opening the door. More recent Minis have a differently shaped key, with optional hands-free entry. In every case the key must be registered in the car’s electronics, and identifying the module involved determines the programming method. The Clubman, Countryman, Paceman and Convertible follow the system of their production year. For a spare or a lost-all-keys job, note the exact year and the chassis number (VIN): they often identify the system before the appointment. A photo of the key usefully completes this information.

My round Mini key is inserted but the car won’t start, why?
Several causes are possible: faulty key electronics, worn contacts in the slot or a weak car battery. Try the second key if you have it. If it starts the car, the first key is probably at fault and can be replaced by a key programmed to your Mini.
What is the emergency blade in the Mini key for?
It is hidden in the fob and lets you open the driver’s door by hand if the key battery or the car battery is flat. It does not start the engine. Check that it is still there: many owners only discover it on the day they need it.
How much does a spare Mini key cost?
