How Alfa Romeo keys work
The 147, 159, MiTo and Giulietta use the architecture of the older Fiat generation: a flip key whose head combines the remote and the transponder recognised by the immobiliser unit. Over the years, the spring tires, the blade no longer flips out properly and the rubber buttons split; a new shell can then take the original electronics, provided the circuit board is intact. The Giulia and Stelvio, followed by the Tonale, move to a remote fob with no visible blade and a start button, with an emergency blade tucked inside the fob to open the door when the battery is flat. On these recent models, feasibility depends on the year and equipment: we check it with the chassis number (VIN) before giving a free quote. For a spare, bring the key that still works: it is the reference for cutting and for programming.

Your questions
The blade on my Giulietta key won’t flip out, do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. When only the flip mechanism is worn, the original electronics can be moved into a new shell and the blade recut if needed. If the remote or the transponder is damaged, a new key has to be programmed to the car. We test the key before recommending one option or the other.
My Giulia remote is dead, how do I get into the car?
The Giulia fob hides an emergency blade: slide it out of the casing to open the driver’s door. Then replace the coin battery. If the key still does not respond with a fresh battery, the circuit may be damaged; send us the chassis number so we can check what is possible for your model year.
