How BMW keys work
On 2000s BMWs (the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series and X5 of that era), the remote is pushed into a slot near the steering wheel before you press Start. Its battery is rechargeable and charges while you drive, so a key left in a drawer for a long time may look dead without being faulty. Later generations, including the 2 Series, 4 Series, X1, X3 and i3, use a remote that stays in your pocket or the console; the battery is replaceable and, when it is flat, you start the car by holding the key against the marked area on the steering column. All of them hide an emergency blade for the driver’s door. If all keys are lost, the work is done on the module that stores the keys, and feasibility depends on its version: the chassis number (VIN) identifies it before the quote. Keep your remaining key safe; it is your best backup.

My BMW 3 Series key no longer locks remotely but the car starts: is that serious?
On 3 Series cars with a key pushed into a slot, the rechargeable battery eventually wears out: the remote loses range while the transponder still starts the car. Driving for a while with the key inserted can help; if nothing changes, the battery or the key needs replacing. Also try the second key to compare.
Can a BMW key be made when none are left?
Often yes, but it depends on the module that stores the keys in your BMW. After a damage-free opening, this module is read to prepare a new key, sometimes directly on the car. Send us the model, year and chassis number (VIN): we check feasibility before giving you a free quote.
