How Mazda keys work
First-generation Mazda2, Mazda3 and Mazda6 models, like many MX-5s, use a flip key: the blade springs out at the press of a button and the remote buttons are built into the shell. On more recent models, including the CX-3, CX-30 and CX-5 depending on trim, the hands-free key lets you unlock with the button on the door handle and start with a push button; a mechanical backup key is stored inside. In both cases, the transponder chip must be recognised by the immobiliser before the engine will start. Common weak points are the hinge of the flip blade and buttons worn down over the years. Before ordering a spare, check whether your Mazda has a key you turn or a start button: it is the first clue to the key type you need. With only one key left, a spare avoids the all-keys-lost scenario.

My Mazda flip key is broken but the electronics work: do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. If only the shell or hinge is damaged and the circuit and chip are intact, they can often be moved into a new shell with a blade cut to match. If the chip is damaged, programming to the car will be needed. Bring the key in for a check.
How do I know if my Mazda CX-5 has a hands-free key?
A start button and a small button on the door handle are clues, but equipment varies with trim level and year. The simplest way is to send us a photo of the key and the year of the car: we identify the exact key model to prepare the quote.
